Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2.6

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Episode 2.6
By Paige Treibley

In this episode, Buffy tries to impress Angel when her date is interrupted by Cordelia. After seeing how women looked when he was alive as a human, Buffy goes to a Halloween shop to get a costume to match the women's style of that time. Willow gets a ghost costume and Xander gets a US soldier costume. Halloween night, all the costumes bought from Ethan's Costume Shoppe give the person wearing it that persona.
Buffy, the main character is usually a brave and confident female character but once she sees Angel with Cordelia, she becomes self-conscious of her looks. This is a normal occurrence shown in the media done by females, where they feel self-conscious of other girls due to the attention of a boy. This episode takes it to as far as showing Buffy try to change her entire appearance to impress Angel.
When Halloween night takes effect than Buffy becomes the stereotypical damsel in distress and looks for protection with Xander who is taking the persona of a US soldier. She also faints which is shown in more feminine characters. She even tells Willow that it is the "men's job to protect us."

Xander who is normally a character who is not sure of what is going turns into a confident and attentive person. As well as Willow although she became a ghost which is a physical persona change instead of personality.

When she is turned into a ghost, she gets very focused on helping her friends. She is  of the only people who are dressed up who understands what's going on because of this she takes charge of the situation and orders everyone to stay put so she can figure out what is going on. She takes Buffy's rule for part of the episode as an empowered woman.

  1. I think you did a good job explaining how important confidence was in the episode. I also watched this episode and the way Willow and Buffy were able to feel confident and happy with who they are by the end of the show was very important. I never thought about the way Xanders confidence changed throughout the film, thanks for pulling that out of the show!
