Netflix Dracula Series Episode 1

Netflix Dracula Series: Episode 1
Difference Between the book and movie

In 1897, the novel Dracula written by Bram Stoker while in 2020 they released a Netflix series of Dracula shown at a different point of view. Dracula is a classic Gothic horror novel written by an Irish author.  The novel is written in a series of letters and diary entries from the characters within the book. The novel tells a story of Dracula going to England so that he can find new blood and spread a curse, with a battle between Dracula and a small group of individuals which is lead by Van Helsing. Throughout the book you get journal entries from Johnathan Harker as well as individuals, throughout the whole novel we get the point of view from Johnathan's perspective. Learning the perspectives of the characters that write letters you learn more information about others and what is happening around the others while Johnathan is stuck in the Castle (prison without looks).

Difference Between Book & Netflix:

Before watching the first episode of Dracula I had no idea that there were so many different versions of one classic novel made centuries ago. In the beginning scene it opens with Harker and sister Agatha (Van Helsing) walking in saying that others have read his journals and makes a statement that he has been busy writing day and night. But in the book Harker makes a point of keeping his journals safe and keeping them from  the brides as well as Dracula, even wrote them in long hand so the others could decipher the journals. Within the novel and Netflix series there are some parallel parts, most of the time they are completely different. The characters arent the same either, for instance Van Helsing is played as a women in the Netflix series. Mina Murray is an important character in Johnathan's life in the novel but in the netflix series she is not an important character stating that she wrote him a letter saying that if he were to get attracted to or intrequed by the brides Mina as her fiance would understand. In the book Mina would not be okay, I don't like the differences between the movie and the book, today movies never match their original story line within books but to change up a classic story and make a huge plot twist is just insane.

Gender Aspect:

In the novel we are so used to Van Helsing being a dutch professor that is called to help cure Lucy Westenra. In the visual aspect he is played as a nun (sister Agatha) who are trying to encourage Johnathan to spend time with Dracula in the Castle. Everything that Dracula does within this episode with Johnathan makes you question if something is going on between them. The way Dracula looks at Johnathan with a seductive face while holding his face in his hand that makes individuals wonder is there sexual activity happening between the two characters. I prefer the Netflix version than the book personally because picturing all of the activities that happen and or the suspenseful parts are easier to see visually.

Comments

  1. I enjoy how you also noticed and discussed how Dracula interacted with Jonathan in the first episode. Although I don't like the twists that today's movies and shows bring, I do like how modern movies and shows change up their classical stories to become more adventurous and show something they'd be afraid to show in their time.

  2. I really liked your blog! I enjoyed reading your blog and I can say that I also agree with the Netflix adaptation because I reading Bram Stoker's Dracula was sometimes confusing. Overall, great job with your blog!

  3. I really liked the idea of making Van Helsing a woman and i wish that you wrote more on the way that changing this gender affected the character.
